What is Spiritual Companionship?

Spiritual companionship is an interpersonal relationship in which we learn how to grow, live, and love in our spiritual life.

A spiritual companion is trained to listen to you and to God as you talk about your life. A spiritual companion listens nonjudgmentally as you seek to make meaning of your life and to discover how God is present in your challenges, joys, and sorrow.

Possible Topics for Spiritual Companionship Sessions:

  • The meaning of your life
  • Your experience of God’s presence
  • God’s seeming absence
  • Beliefs that are no longer life-giving
  • Darkness and descent as teachers
  • Finding meaning in suffering
  • Seeing your wounds and misdirections as holy
  • Contemplative practices to deepen your prayer
  • Preparing for your death

What is a Session of Spiritual Companionship Like?

We meet for an hour once a month, or how often is comfortable for you, in person, by Zoom or by phone.

We talk together about your life, your questions, and wonderings about life, God, what you believe, how God may be inviting you to a deeper relationship.

We take time for silence and prayer to listen for what God may be saying.

Spiritual companionship is not therapy, counseling, or mentoring. It is a trained spiritual companion listening to you and God as you talk about your journey through life and how God is present or absent.

What Do Others Say About My Spiritual Companionship?

“I have been meeting with Jim for the past nine month as my spiritual companion. He provides a very open and accepting listening presence to whatever I bring to the table. He has brought various quotes and readings for me to contemplate, some from the mystics, some from scriptures and other devotional writings, all very meaningful. During each session he manages to gently lead me to discover what God might be saying to me through thought provoking questions, observations, and through times of quiet meditation. It has brought a comforting focus to me.”
